Internet is a great tool that contains tons of information and learning material but keeping the children safer on the internet is a biggest concern for parents. Recent statistics show an increase in kidnapping and sexual exploitation of children through internet chat rooms. Easy access to adult content and rising hacking trends among children and teens are other two issues that need to be addressed. Latest hacking incident happened when a school boy is charged for hacking his school computer, now faces 38 years in jail. There are many technical ways to protect children on the internet and three most useful tips are discussed below.
Safe search engines don’t index adult content and provide quality entertainment to the children. Always set browser’s default page to one of these safe search engines.
Latest monitoring softwares can be used for recording your child’s online activity .I like big brother because it records every thing including chat, emails and websites URL’S. In addition to that, certain content filtering softwares can also be used.
Some malwares can redirect any website URL to a hacking, cracking or porn site. So, update your computer with the latest definitions of malwares, adwares and spywares.
These techniques can only be implemented at your home computer, If your children have internet access some where else then I would advise you to read FBI’s “A Parent’s Guide To The Internet Safety” for better understanding.
