HostGator Add-On Domain And Duplicate Content Penalty

Posted by admin | May 21, 2009 .

HostGator is my favorite company and my blog is also hosted on their server but I strongly believe that there is one important issue that they need to answer. You can host unlimited sites with their baby and business plans through add on domain option but when you add-on a domain a sub domain also get created automatically. So, same site is accessible with two different domains (Sub domain and top level add on domain).

Google And Duplicate Content

Same content across different domains is considered as duplicate by Goggle. Since your site is accessible with two domains (top level domain and sub domain)! There are definitely chances of getting penalized.

My Experience With Add-On Domains

I’M running couple of Add-On sites along with my main domain internetworld.me and Google have never cached sub domains of my other two sites. I was expecting some solid reasons from their customer service that can guaranty me that Google will only index top level domain not the sub domain. I contacted HostGator live chat! Response that I got from them was not so logical.

Disclaimer (I’M posting this chat because I want logical answer from Hostgator For My Readers)

(9:39:33 AM) Faisal Munir: Yes a sub domain automatically created! but my point is that search engines will consider add on domain and sub domain as two different sites! Right?

(9:40:45 AM) Faisal Munir: so it’s not allowed by search engines

(9:41:28 AM) Barbara Ca: Google or any other search engine only add what you link to, they would not see the subdomain unless you link to it.

(9:42:14 AM) Faisal Munir: hmm

(9:42:17 AM) Faisal Munir: I don’t agree

Bottom Line

HostGator no doubt is a top host and their customer service is best in the business. I know Google is not caching sub domains associated with add-ons (From My Experience with Add-On Domains) but I expect them to provide a technical reason to satisfy customers.
